Let’s Start with my name.
My name is Susan Rick and I am a licensed Clinical Professional counselor in the State of Illinois. I have worked with individuals involved with the Criminal Justice System and currently incarcerated in the state of Illinois. I am a single mother of three who has not always made the best decisions in the past. So I can relate to how easy it is to go down the wrong path but I am also living proof that we can change are direction.
My Education and Experience
I have extensive experience as a counselor and therapist. My career has taken me to both Wellpath Care and Wexford Health Sources where I worked at correctional facilities for the last eight years. Prior to those positions, I worked as a residential counselor at the Northern Illinois Academy.
My education includes a Master of Science in Psychology and a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. I’m currently pursuing a doctorate in forensic psychology.
Treatment Preferences
I am a person-centered therapist who strongly believes in tailoring therapeutic techniques to meet individual needs. Cognitive and dialectical behavior therapy heavily influence my practice, assisting clients in achieving their goals. We will carefully explore the factors that led you to seek therapy and determine effective strategies for personal growth. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) will help us understand how our thoughts impact our emotions, enabling us to reframe unhelpful thinking patterns. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) will empower you with essential skills for mindfulness, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness, enabling real and long-lasting positive change. In addition to CBT and DBT, I also integrate elements of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) to help clients cultivate a greater sense of awareness and acceptance in their lives. Furthermore, I draw from positive psychology to focus on clients’ strengths and virtues, fostering a more optimistic outlook and enhancing overall well-being. My approach also includes elements of narrative therapy, which allows clients to reframe their life stories and explore new meanings and interpretations. These additional techniques complement the core principles of person-centered therapy, providing a comprehensive and tailored approach to each individual’s therapeutic journey.
Who am I?

What I believe
I believe that to err is human, as the saying goes, and we all make mistakes and bad choices from time to time. However, it is important to remember that each mistake does not have to define who we are as individuals. Rather, it is through acknowledging our missteps and learning from them that we can grow and evolve. We are undeniably influenced by our environment, shaping our thoughts and actions, but this does not mean that we are incapable of change. With the right guidance, support, and determination, we have the ability to transform ourselves and carve a brighter path for our future.
My Approach
As a therapist, I provide a secure and confidential environment for clients to explore their thoughts and behaviors. There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ approach to therapy. It is a personal journey that moves at your own pace. I tailor evidence-based therapies to each client’s needs and goals, aiming to remove obstacles to a fulfilling life. My goal is to empower clients to discover their potential and make meaningful changes. I highly value each client’s uniqueness, diversity, and autonomy, fostering trust and respect in our therapeutic partnership to help clients overcome challenges and improve their lives.

What people are saying

Amazing therapist. Especially considering the fact that I never considered therapy for a long time, having a therapist like Susan really has helped me, and I will continue going to her for the foreseeable future!

Susan listens and pays excellent attention. She goes above and beyond to make sure that I am understanding the concepts she is helping me understand, and she spends a great deal of time making sure that she understands where my head is at. She reaches out between sessions and reads all of my journal entries, gives great homework assignments, and I feel she genuinely cares about how I am doing on a daily basis.

Susan is extremely personable, and I appreciate it so much. She is easy to talk to, and makes me feel comfortable expressing my feelings and concerns. 100% recommend.
